CIC comments on ACMD review
Following publication of the letter from Home Office Minister Rt Hon Dame Diana Johnson MP to the ACMD this week, CIC CEO Mike Morgan-Giles commented:
“The Cannabis Industry Council welcomes the Government asking the ACMD to review the state of play in the medical cannabis industry.
“However, medical cannabis prescriptions in the UK lag far behind comparable jurisdictions such as Australia, largely due to policy and regulatory issues. The CIC would like to see the introduction of reforms such as GPs initiating prescriptions, pathways for NHS reimbursement of private prescriptions, and electronic prescribing.
“Furthermore, the CIC believes it is fundamentally inaccurate to imply that the small private prescription market has impacted clinical trials and research. There are much wider issues causing this, including an unwillingness to consider real-world evidence where the data is compelling, and a lack of understanding around why the clinical trials framework is completely unsuitable for multi-compound botanical medicines such as prescription cannabis.
“The CIC will be consulting with members and engaging with key stakeholders to develop a detailed response to these matters.”
