New Guidance | Business setup, contracts, and payment
The Cannabis Industry Council (CIC) has published new guidance aimed at supporting members and industry professionals with setting up businesses in the UK, managing contracts, and addressing payment practices.
The guidance responds to multiple requests from CIC members for practical and legal support around business formation, contractual obligations, and payment terms. It is designed to help professionals establish a strong legal foundation, protect their commercial interests, and follow best practices in the emerging cannabis sector.
The document covers key topics including business registration, contract elements and negotiation considerations, payment terms, common challenges faced by contractors and freelancers, and tips to minimise disputes.
Nick Pateras, co-author of the guidance, said:
“In response to several members requesting support around setting up new businesses in the UK, including advice on contracts, legal rights and best practices, we felt it was worthwhile to publish a guidance document covering these topics. As an organisation, we are committed to helping members follow best practices in order to protect themselves, their partners and the industry as a whole.”
Dr Callie Seaman, co-author, added:
“Starting a business can be an exciting time, but it can also be a very stressful time. Starting with a good foundation is key to success and can help to prevent issues in the future. The CIC has many members who are just starting on their journey and we hope to help them to navigate the sometimes rocky roads of becoming a contractor and freelancer.”
The guidance is available to download now on the CIC resources page. Members are encouraged to review the document and contact the CIC team if they have questions.
