GPhC Publishes Themed Review of Pharmacies Providing Cannabis-Based Products
The General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC) has published a thematic review focusing on the supply of cannabis-based products for medicinal use (CBPMs) by registered pharmacies in the UK.
Key Findings
The review provides assurance that most pharmacies met the required standards for the safe procurement, storage, and dispensing of CBPMs. This demonstrates that the majority of registered pharmacies supplying cannabis medicines are operating to appropriate professional standards.
Where pharmacies did not meet standards, GPhC inspectors supported them in making the necessary improvements and, where appropriate, put further measures in place to protect the public. At the time the review was written:
- Five of the eight pharmacies that didn’t initially meet standards had already taken effective action to address issues raised
- Three pharmacies were awaiting reinspection
Areas for Improvement
Despite the generally positive findings, the review identifies a continuing need for clearer messaging around the risks associated with the prescribing and supply of CBPMs. This is particularly important for online models of care, where the process is often more complex and carries greater risk.
The GPhC emphasizes that pharmacies must identify and manage risks throughout the entire process to ensure they are providing safe and effective care to patients.
Standards and Compliance
The review examined how pharmacies are meeting professional standards across several key areas:
- Procurement: Ensuring medicines are obtained from legitimate, licensed sources
- Storage: Maintaining appropriate security and environmental controls for controlled drugs
- Dispensing: Following proper procedures for labelling, checking, and supplying medicines
- Clinical governance: Having appropriate systems for clinical oversight and patient safety
- Record keeping: Maintaining accurate documentation as required by law
Implications for the Sector
This review demonstrates the GPhC’s commitment to ensuring high standards in the supply of cannabis medicines while supporting pharmacies to improve where necessary. The findings suggest that the regulatory framework is working effectively to protect patients, though continued vigilance and clearer guidance remain priorities.
For pharmacies providing CBPMs, the review serves as a reminder of the importance of robust systems and processes throughout the supply chain, with particular attention needed for online prescribing models.
