Beyond Awareness: Patient Choice, Safety & Improved Quality of Life: Live Broadcast in Wokingham – 20 October

The Cannabis Industry Council (CIC) is bringing together patients, patient organisations, healthcare professionals, researchers, policymakers and industry leaders for a live educational broadcast exploring patient choice, safety, access to treatment and quality of life.
Beyond Awareness: Patient Choice, Safety & Improved Quality of Life will bring together a range of perspectives to look beyond awareness and examine the real-world experiences of people living with chronic conditions, the healthcare professionals supporting them, and the wider pathway that sits behind every prescription.
The CIC is proud to be working in partnership with charities including Parkinsons.me and Different Strokes, bringing valuable patient perspectives to the discussion and ensuring the voices and experiences of those living with chronic conditions are central to the conversation.
What to expect
Broadcasted live from British Cannabis headquarters in Wokingham, the programme will feature a series of panel discussions, expert interviews and audience Q&As throughout the day:
- Patient Perspectives: Living Beyond the Diagnosis: We’ll begin by hearing directly from patient and advocacy voices about the realities of living with chronic conditions, navigating treatment options and managing quality of life. The discussion will explore why informed patient choice matters, as well as the challenges patients and carers can face when navigating different care pathways.
- The Role of the Clinician: Guest medical doctors will discuss where cannabis-based products for medicinal use (CBPMs) fit within UK healthcare. The conversation will cover patient assessment, responsible prescribing and some of the common misconceptions surrounding medical cannabis.
- Safety, Regulation & Responsible Prescribing: An expert panel will explore the safeguards surrounding medical cannabis in the UK, including regulation, product quality, patient monitoring and responsible prescribing. The session will consider how medical cannabis can be responsibly integrated into healthcare while maintaining patient safety at every stage.
- High Functioning, Not High: Guest medical doctors will explore lower-intoxicating cannabinoid options and CBD, alongside the concepts of functionality, stigma and maintaining quality of life.
- Supporting Patients Beyond the Prescription: Treatment does not begin and end with a prescription. This panel will explore what support can look like between appointments, including the role of carers, education, rehabilitation, multidisciplinary care and long-term patient support. Patient organisations and advocates will bring their experiences to a discussion focused on the wider support patients may need throughout their treatment journey.
- Behind The Medicine: The Journey of a Medical Cannabis Prescription: What actually happens behind the scenes once a patient seeks medical cannabis treatment? This session will follow the journey of a prescription from start to finish, bringing together voices from across the medical cannabis supply chain. The discussion will explore the different stages involved, from why a patient seeks treatment and clinical assessment, through product selection and prescribing, manufacturing or cultivation, laboratory testing and quality assurance, distribution and patient follow-up.
The broadcast will then close with reflections from CIC leadership, key takeaways from the day’s discussions and information on resources available to patients. There will also be an opportunity for attendees to submit further questions for speakers to answer following the broadcast.

At its heart, the Beyond Awareness broadcast is about creating a more informed conversation around patient choice and safety. By bringing patients, carers, clinicians, patient organisations, researchers and industry together in one forum, the broadcast aims to encourage greater understanding of the realities of living with chronic conditions and the different considerations involved in accessing and navigating treatment.
