New Chapter for UK Medical Cannabis Policy
The CIC welcomes the appointment of Andy Burnham as Prime Minister and Yvette Cooper as Secretary of State for Health & Social Care. We are optimistic that the new government presents an opportunity for constructive, evidence-led engagement on the future of medical cannabis in the UK.
The UK’s medical cannabis sector has matured significantly since CBPMs were rescheduled in 2018, yet barriers to patient access, prescribing, research and education remain. It is our hope that the new government will work closely with patients, clinicians, regulators and the UK’s medical cannabis industry to ensure policy keeps pace with clinical evidence and the needs of those who could benefit from treatment.
The CIC stands ready to engage with ministers, parliamentarians, regulators and officials to support proportionate regulation, improve patient access and encourage high standards across the sector.
Through our strategic pillars (Policy & Regulatory Advocacy, Networking & Collaboration, and Standards & Awareness), we will continue to strengthen engagement between industry, policymakers and regulators, equip our members with the resources to engage effectively with the regulatory landscape, build parliamentary understanding of the sector, and promote education that supports a safe, well-regulated and internationally respected medical cannabis industry.
